My wife has been an ardent opponent of the manual transmission and I had decided to not look at cars with one so that she’d be able to drive my car to work when I take her car to the mechanic’s.

This weekend when discussing a Mazda 5 I told her I had seen a nice one but it had a manual transmission and so I hadn’t really looked into it. She asked me why and I explained the above. Shockingly she responded that she would be, “Ok ... I guess” with a manual transmission. She went on to tell me she could drive one but not well and she feels it’d be a good skill for our daughter to learn.

Hells yeah! Manual wagon here I come!

You could of argued the case, if you needed to, that the manual gearbox is a great anti-theft device and even in the event of a car-jacking just to calmly get out the car and get somewhere safe (or go for a coffee) and come back in a few minutes to retrieve the car.

I’m not interested in forcing my wife to do things she doesn’t want to do especially if that involves her abusing my clutch.

I’ve owned a car or two over the years that I imagined a carjacker would jump right back out and shoot me...

The term ‘argued the case’ is generally understood to mean ‘proposed the benefits of’, and not a form of force or coercion.

If there was misunderstanding it was made in my post which I apologise.

Damn, that's a nice little surprise. My current vehicle is an automatic (CVT no less), but I long for a manual again. Granted, for my day to day travels the automatic makes more sense because I sit in a lot of traffic. I just wish that there was a way I could get the best of both worlds (DSG) in my current vehicle.

Youre buying her a manual car, how is it ‘your clutch’?

Great news! Good thing you learned this early and not AFTER settling for a slushbox. Most people are never really clear or realistic about their needs, especially with cars. Witness all the “Should I buy a new Mustang GT or Dodge Durango R/T?!” types of threads out there. It’s like people don’t know (or care) what they need, they just random spout off comments based on what they happen to see, or can afford. Just yesterday I quashed the wife’s comments about “The Acura MDX looks nice” by saying “at the end of the day, it’s almost the same as our Odyssey." :D

Well either way, if it needs repair he is paying for it. Or rather "they" are paying for it.

There was no misunderstanding. I guess force wasn’t the right term but arguing in favor of a manual until she conceded that it was the best choice would still have her unwillingly driving my manual transmission and that would not be good. Now that she’s taken this position, however, we’re good to go for the shifty shift.

That is why you need three cars then lol. I am not giving up my manual driving no matter what. My girlfriend (soon to be more than that) is not interested in driving a manual so she will have an automatic car. And I will certainly have my own manual car. I can’t really fathom buying an automatic as another car, but it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have something else she is willing to drive. She would much rather call for an Uber than ever try to drive my Miata lol.

I still might end up with a slushbox. A manual is a want and not a need. I need more cargo space, remote locking, a/c, the ability to listen to my ipod, and similar or better comfort and mpgs.

I want a roof rack, tow hitch and a manual transmission.

Fear not the manual for the manual will set you free!

My wife’s first auto was the Explorer she picked out for herself. She learned two things: she hates the Explorer and misses having a manual. Now she tries to swap cars with me at every opportunity.

We have three cars but one is a roofless truck that is in pieces in our garage. I was given a hard cap of two for my vehicles otherwise we’d have very many cars and our neighbors and my wife would be angry.

Yeah, that’s how we ended up with the minivan :D If only Mazda would get back into the minivan game, I’d be excited. If anyone can do a decent slushbox with manual shifting (maybe paddles), it would be them. As it stands, I might be inheriting the Odyssey one day soon. Which I don’t really mind, because I’ll just slap my K&N and Glock stickers on the back window and use it as a FWD enclosed pickup truck and camping/climbing trip van. You can sleep three on an air mattress in the back, no problem.

My wife let me buy my Camaro with a manual. She has driven it once. Drove about 40 miles and did not stop once. Amazingly, she only california stopped for one stop sign and made it through all lights while they were green.

I’m thinking Forester or Element at the moment. Not much on the wagon front around.

Have you looked into a used WRX hatchback? It’s got cargo space and a manual. And can be a fun daily.

Counterpoint though, a ZF equipped f31 touring can also be had. That automatic is not one to be scoffed at.

Lucky.

Mine rides a motorcycle (manual shifter and all), refuses to learn to drive a manual transmission car.

Nah the hatch is too small and I have no desire to own a BMW. I’d ultimately prefer something na and fwd for simplicity sake but I’d certainly consider a Forester.

You could always pitch it as a useful skill to have just in case. My wife has a panic attack thinking about me on a motorcycle. Not to say that it is unwarranted I’m quite clumsy.

All she needs is practise! Driving a manual becomes second nature and you don’t even notice it, but it takes some hours. But that’s all. She’ll get there given time, and she might even come to like it.

Glad she’s got an open mind though
